The Winner

If you live in New York’s 2nd Congressional District, Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-NY) will represent you for a fourth term. Garbarino defeated Democrat Patrick Halpin, a former Suffolk County executive, Herald Community Newspapers reported on Wednesday.

Garbarino had 51.6% of the vote to Halpin’s 48.4% in the latest unofficial count, a margin of about 3 points, according to Ballotpedia’s results for the race. That’s much closer than in 2024, when Garbarino won 59.7% to 40.2%. The result keeps the seat in Republican hands.

The Race

Halpin ran on the Democratic and Working Families Party lines, and Garbarino ran on the Republican and Conservative Party lines. Halpin never faced Democratic primary voters: his rivals withdrew or were disqualified, and the June 23 primary was canceled. Cook Political Report and Inside Elections rated the race Solid Republican, and Sabato’s Crystal Ball rated it Safe Republican.

The district covers the south shore of Nassau and Suffolk counties, TBR News Media has reported. About 782,000 people live there, and the typical household earns about $128,000 a year. About 34% of adults hold at least a bachelor’s degree, the unemployment rate is about 5%, and about 6% of residents live below the poverty line.

What’s Next

Garbarino’s fourth term begins Jan. 3, 2027. New York is still counting ballots, so the margin could shift before the state certifies the results. He told the Herald he plans to “strengthen Long Island’s economy,” improve infrastructure, back law enforcement and fight fentanyl trafficking.
