California's 30th District Primary

The California 30th district primary has come and gone, and Democratic incumbent Laura Friedman emerged from it in a commanding position. With the June 2 top-two primary now certified, Friedman and Republican challenger Scott A. Meyers are set to face off in the November 3 general election, but major political forecasters already consider the district to have a near-certain Democratic hold.

California uses a nonpartisan top-two primary system, meaning all candidates, regardless of party, compete on the same ballot. The two candidates who receive the most votes advance to the general election, no matter which party they belong to. On June 7, seven candidates appeared on the ballot for California's 30th congressional district's primary, and Friedman and Meyers emerged victorious. Friedman received 102,384 votes, or 52.7% of the vote, while Meyers finished second with 32,216 votes, or 16.6%.

California's 30th congressional district covers all of Burbank and Glendale, the Linda Vista neighborhood of Pasadena, and significant swaths of Los Angeles including the Hollywood, West Hollywood, and Park La Brea communities. The district has historically voted blue.

The Candidates

Laura Friedman has represented California's 30th congressional district in the House since 2025, and is currently seeking a second term. Friedman serves on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. After receiving a B.A. from the University of Rochester, she worked as a film and television producer before representing the 44th district in the California State Assembly.

Meyers was raised in Southern California, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in political science from UCLA. Afterwords, he received a J.D. from Pepperdine Law School and has practiced civil law in California for 37 years.

The Money Behind the Race

FEC filings as of May 13 show that Friedman leads candidates' financial totals, with almost $750,000 in total receipts. Meyers comes in third, with about $58,000 in total receipts.

The filings list two independent expenditures, both contributions to Friedman's campaign. According to the FEC, the Planned Parenthood Los Angeles County Action Fund gave $0.19 to her campaign, and the Sierra Club Independent Action gave $10.

Ratings vs Odds

As of mid-June, Cook Political Report, Sabato's Crystal Ball, and Inside Elections all rated California's 30th congressional district as "solid Democratic." This is the strongest possible rating in the Democratic direction.

Prediction market data tells a similar story. As of July 13, Kalshi gave Democrats a 95% probability of winning the seat in November, with Republicans at just 5%.
