California's 35th House Race
Incumbent Democrat Norma Torres dominated the June 2 primary in California's 35th U.S. House District, crushing Republican challenger Mike Cargile with nearly 60% of the vote. Torres heads into the November 3 general election as the clear frontrunner in a district rated "solid Democratic" by the consensus of political forecasters.
The Candidates
Torres has represented California's 35th congressional district in the House since 2015. Torres is a member of the Committee on House Appropriations, the ranking member of the House Subcommittee on Oversight, and a member of a large number of caucuses. Torres is also the former mayor of Pomona and a former member of the California State Assembly.
Cargile is a self-described "family man" and former deacon at his church.
The Money Behind the Race
In the primary, Torres lead the candidates' financial totals, with around $769,000 in total receipts. Cargile trailed behind with almost $5,000 in total receipts.
According to FEC filings, the only outside spending came from Planned Parenthood, in support of Torres' campaign. The donation amounted to $40.59.
Ratings vs Odds
Cook Political Report rated the district as "solid Democratic." The prediction markets are telling a similar story: as of July 16, Kalshi gave Democrats a 99% chance of winning the seat.
