California's 43rd District Primary
Democrat Maxine Waters is again running for re-election in California's 43rd U.S. congressional district, and swept most of the vote in the June 2 primary. In line with California's "jungle" primary system, the original pool of four candidates was narrowed down to the top two most popular, which included Waters and Cristian Morales, the Republican contender. Waters, who has represented the district since 1991, secured 75,693 votes (or 63.8% of the total vote). Morales, Waters' nearest challenger, only received 20,009 votes (or 16.9% of the total vote).
The Candidates
Before becoming a representative in the House, Waters served seven terms in the California State Assembly. Waters, who was born in Missouri, received her bachelor's degree in sociology from California State University, Los Angeles, in 1971. In Congress, Waters was an outspoken opponent against the Iraq War.
Morales, born in Guatemala City, Guatemala, earned his bachelor's degree from Purdue University and graduate degree from Cornell University in industrial and labor relations. Morales is the former vice president of operations at Industrial Electronic Engineers.
The Money Behind the Race
Waters lead the candidates' financial totals in the primary, with more than $700,000 in total receipts as of May 13. Outside spending amounted to a total of $10.19 according to the FEC, all of which was donated in support of Waters' campaign by Sierra Club Independent Action and Planned Parenthood.
Ratings vs Odds
Cook Political Report rated California's 43rd congressional district as "solid Democratic," and the prediction markets are telling a similar story. As of July 10, Kalshi placed Waters at a 99% chance of winning the seat, with odds that Morales will emerge victorious sitting at 1%.
