Who's In the Race
Rep. Nikema Williams (D-GA) is the Democratic incumbent in Georgia's 5th U.S. House District and Republican John Salvesen won his party's primary.
Williams has represented the district since 2021, previously served in the Georgia State Senate, and chaired the Democratic Party of Georgia from 2019 to 2025. She won the Democratic primary with about 88 percent of the vote over Arnetress Beatty.
Salvesen, also known as "Bongo," ran unopposed in the Republican primary.
What They Stand For
Williams has supported Medicare for All, saying she continues "to support Medicare for All," according to a Decaturish candidate Q&A. She has also supported:
- Building affordable housing and helping people buy and keep homes,
- Protecting voting rights and expanding ballot access,
- Reproductive rights, which she describes as "human rights," according to her campaign website.
Salvesen's campaign site describes him as advocating for community representation and change.
Race Outlook: Ratings and Betting Markets
All three major race-rating services call this contest solidly in Williams's favor. The Cook Political Report rated the race "Solid Democratic" as of Oct. 9; Sabato's Crystal Ball rated it "Solid Democratic" as of Oct. 11; and Inside Elections rated it "Solid Democratic" as of Oct. 2.
On Kalshi, traders gave Democrats, whose nominee is Williams, a 98.32 percent chance of winning as of Oct. 13.
The district's own history reflects that strength. Williams won Georgia's 5th District with about 82 percent in 2022 and about 86 percent in 2024. Statewide, Republicans won nine of Georgia's 14 U.S. House seats in both 2022 and 2024, with Democrats holding five. In the 2024 presidential race, Republican Donald Trump carried Georgia with about 51 percent of the vote.
