The Winner
If you live in New York’s 5th Congressional District, Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) will keep representing you, and he is expected to lead the House committee that oversees U.S. foreign policy. Meeks defeated Rockaway Republican George Marsh with more than 80% of the vote on Tuesday, Nov. 3, The Wave reported.
Unofficial results show Meeks with 125,841 votes to Marsh’s 30,515, according to Ballotpedia’s race results. The results stay unofficial until New York certifies them.
The Race
George Marsh also ran on the Queens United line. Both parties’ June 23 primaries were canceled, so Marsh and Meeks advanced without appearing on a primary ballot. Cook Political Report and Inside Elections rated the race Solid Democratic, and Sabato’s Crystal Ball rated it Safe Democratic.
The southeast Queens district includes the Rockaway peninsula and Broad Channel. About 789,700 people live there, and residents are about 41% Black, 21% Hispanic, 15% white and 15% Asian.
The median age is about 40, the typical household earns about $86,600 a year and about 29% of adults hold at least a bachelor’s degree. The unemployment rate is about 8.6%, and about 13% of residents live below the poverty line.
What’s Next
Meeks, who has served in the House since 1998, begins his new term Jan. 3, 2027, when Democrats take control of the House. He chaired the House Foreign Affairs Committee from 2021 to 2023 and is now its top Democrat. To lead it again, he must be nominated by the Democrats’ Steering and Policy Committee and approved by the full caucus, The Hill reported.
In a letter to colleagues Thursday, Nov. 5, Meeks wrote that “oversight of this administration’s lawlessness and corruption will be at the top of the agenda.” He also said he would bring resolutions to the floor to end the war with Iran, Roll Call reported.
