Who's In the Race
Incumbent Rep. Jonathan Jackson (D-IL)and Republican challenger Christian Maxwell will face each other in Illinois's 1st U.S. House District this fall. Jackson ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on March 17, drawing 89,662 votes. Maxwell won the Republican primary that same day with 64.5 percent of the vote, defeating Marcus Lewis. The general election will take place on November 3rd.
What They Stand For
Jackson's campaign says he advocates for equal and adequate education and supports expanding access to women's health services and reproductive care.
Maxwell supports eliminating federal taxes on tips and overtime pay, according to WTTW, and wants to reduce the federal tax burden on homeowners facing high property taxes. On immigration, Maxwell supports policies that combine border enforcement with immigration-process reforms, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Maxwell has said that Republican strength in Will County, concerns about public safety and education, and her voter outreach give her a chance to make the race competitive, according to Chicago's Morning Answer.
Race Outlook: Ratings and Betting Markets
Three rating services all call this race "Solid Democratic": Cook Political Report as of Sept. 25, Sabato's Crystal Ball as of Sept. 29, and Inside Elections as of Oct. 2. On Kalshi, the prediction market gave Democrats a 94.1 percent chance of winning the seat as of Oct. 5, with Republicans at 5.9 percent.
Democrat Jonathan L. Jackson won this district in 2022 with 67 percent of the vote. Jackson won Illinois's 1st U.S. House District in 2024 with about 66 percent of the vote. In the 2024 presidential race, Democrat Kamala Harris carried Illinois with 54.4 percent of the vote.
