What Happened?
Evangelicals for a Better Future, an evangelical Christian super PAC, has reported $1 million in outside spending supporting James Talarico in the Texas Senate race.
The group made two digital ad purchases through a firm called Digital Strategies: $400,000 on Sept. 1 and $600,000 on Oct. 1.
Why Does it Matter to Me?
The group's website promotes Talarico as a candidate whose Christian faith informs his positions on public schools, affordable child care, paid family leave and prescription drug costs.
Both Sides, Now
Supporters of the spending argue it reflects a genuine faith-based constituency mobilizing around shared values, framing the backing as rooted in Christian principles of service and justice rather than partisan politics.
Critics of large outside expenditures argue they can obscure who is really funding a campaign. As of June 30, Evangelicals for a Better Future reported only $22,687.75 in receipts. Because the committee later reported $1 million in independent expenditures, filings covering the period after June 30 will be needed to identify the additional funding sources.
The Brennan Center for Justice documented that dark-money spending reached a record $1.9 billion in the 2024 federal elections, including undisclosed money that flowed into races through contributions to super PACs and direct spending.
Super PAC spending is legal under federal law. Congress sets the disclosure rules, and the Federal Election Commission (FEC) enforces them. No allegation of wrongdoing has been made against Evangelicals for a Better Future.
