The Race
Former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin defeated 14-term incumbent U.S. Rep. John Larson in the Democratic primary for Connecticut's 1st Congressional District on August 11. The Associated Press called the race around 10 p.m., with Bronin capturing approximately 53.5% of the vote to Larson's 34.7%, with an estimated 51% of votes counted. Two other candidates, state Rep. Jillian Gilchrest and Hartford Board of Education member Ruth Fortune, combined for about 11.8% of the vote.
Observers described Bronin's victory over the long-serving incumbent as a political upset and "a political earthquake in Connecticut." The result effectively guarantees Bronin the seat, as the Democratic nominee is heavily favored in the heavily Democratic district.
