Who's In the Race

Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY), who serves on the House Ways and Means Committee and co-chairs the Problem Solvers Caucus, is seeking another term. His opponent is Mike LiPetri, a Farmingdale attorney and former New York State Assembly member.

Suozzi served as mayor of Glen Cove from 1994 to 2001 and as Nassau County executive from 2002 to 2009. He won the Democratic primary with about 80% of the vote over Danielle Welch. LiPetri represented the 9th Assembly District from 2019 to 2021 and says he co-chaired a statewide Water Quality Task Force during that time. He won the Republican primary with about 82% of the vote over Greg Hach. Three additional candidates are on the general-election ballot alongside the two major-party nominees.

What They Stand For

Suozzi has proposed an American Affordability Plan that he says would cut everyday costs, reduce waste, and return more money to working families. He has called for cutting "irresponsible tariffs" and bringing jobs back to the United States. On taxes, his campaign website says he will work to restore the full State and Local Tax (SALT) a deduction to reduce the financial burden on Long Island families. On immigration, he has called for a bipartisan approach that secures the border while protecting Dreamers and Temporary Protected Status recipients, according to Herald Community Newspapers. He has also said prescription drug costs should be brought down further, expanding on Medicare and Medicaid price-negotiation measures, per Herald Community Newspapers.

LiPetri has supported lifting the SALT cap and eliminating taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security, and has called for reducing taxes and red tape for families, according to his campaign website. On public safety, his campaign website says law enforcement officers "deserve and have earned our full and unapologetic support." On immigration, he has supported deporting people in the country illegally who have committed crimes, while saying law-abiding immigrants should enter through legal channels, per his campaign website. He has called for a healthcare system centered on patient choice, portable and preventive care, and price transparency, according to his campaign website. He has also opposed efforts to boycott, divest from, or sanction Israel and called for a forceful response to terrorism, per his campaign website.

The Money Behind the Race

Federal Election Commission filings show Suozzi raised about $5.5 million through June 30 and had about $5.7 million in the bank. LiPetri raised about $1.7 million through Sept. 30 and had about $723,000 cash on hand, according to FEC filings. LiPetri carried about $57,000 in debt.

Outside spending in the race totaled about $2,700 as of Oct. 8. Of that, about $1,377 supported Suozzi and about $31 was spent opposing LiPetri.
