Who's In the Race
The race for New York's 6th Congressional District pits incumbent Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY) against Republican Joseph Chou in the November 3 general election.
Meng has represented the district since 2013, previously served in the New York State Assembly from 2009 to 2012, and worked as a public-interest lawyer before entering public service. She won the June 23 Democratic primary with about 57 percent of the vote over Chuck Park.
Chou describes himself as a Queens small-business owner and a naturalized citizen whose campaign is guided by Christian beliefs and focuses on community safety, prosperity, and unity. The Republican primary was canceled, and Chou advanced unopposed.
What They Stand For
Meng says she supports protecting reproductive care, including abortion, contraception, and in vitro fertilization (IVF), according to her campaign website. She's also supported: protecting Social Security and Medicare and opposing efforts to undermine them, broader health-care access and affordability, including Medicare for All, and lowering prescription-drug costs, raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour, supporting small businesses, and strengthening worker protections including collective bargaining; and comprehensive immigration reform and treating immigrants with dignity and respect.
Chou has proposed a balanced tax policy that lightens burdens on working families and small businesses, and supports fair student-loan interest rates, according to his campaign website. He's also supported empowering parents in decisions about their children's education and health, and making child care more affordable, public, private, and alternative education pathways, with school curricula that include vocational training, arts, and sciences; and a fair and effective immigration system with secure borders, stronger cooperation among local, state, and federal agencies on serious criminal threats, and a review of cashless bail.
The Money Behind the Race
Meng had raised about $2 million and had about $1 million in cash on hand through June 30, according to Federal Election Commission filings. Joseph Chou is a Republican candidate who is not an incumbent. Outside groups spent $10 supporting Meng, with Sierra Club Independent Action as the sole spender on that side.
Race Outlook: Ratings and Betting Markets
All three major race-rating services call this contest solidly in Meng's favor. Cook Political Report rated the race "Solid Democratic" as of Oct. 9; Sabato's Crystal Ball rated it "Solid Democratic" as of Oct. 11; and Inside Elections rated it "Solid Democratic" as of Oct. 2. On Kalshi, traders gave Democrats a 98.74 percent chance of winning as of Oct. 15.
The district's recent history reinforces that picture. Meng won the 6th District with about 62 percent of the vote in 2022 and won again in 2024. Democrats won 18 of New York's 26 U.S. House seats in 2022 and 19 of 26 in 2024. At the top of the ticket, Democrat Kamala Harris carried New York in the 2024 presidential election with about 55 percent of the vote.
