Kaine Takes Aim at Six Major Issues

Sen. Tim Kaine is pushing hard on veterans' care, reproductive rights, Russia sanctions, and more, signaling where Democrats plan to fight heading into the election.

He directly challenged the Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche's pledge to make the Dobbs decision (a landmark ruling in 2022 that holds the Constitution doesn't confer a right to abortion) "permanent in every single state," reaffirming Virginia's commitment to protecting women's reproductive freedom. It's a notable stand: Virginia is the only Southern state without an abortion ban or heavy restriction since Roe v. Wade fell.

On the national security front, Kaine cosponsored a bipartisan sanctions bill that sailed through the Senate 86–11 on Aug. 7, targeting Russia and now heading to the House. After visiting Ukraine last month, Kaine has been vocal about the need for "comprehensive sanctions on Russia" as part of the U.S. response to the invasion.

On Aug. 12, the senator commemorated the ninth anniversary of the 2017 Charlottesville attack, honoring the three victims: Heather Heyer, Lt. Jay Cullen, and Trooper-Pilot Berke Bates. And with cyclospora, Ebola, measles, and screwworm outbreaks active, he criticized the Department of Health and Human Services, saying it "should be led by science" rather than "a man chasing conspiracy theories," referencing Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Kaine is also backing the PROMISE Act, which would require the Social Security Advisory Board to send Congress a bill ensuring the Trust Fund stays solvent for at least 50 years.

Together, these initiatives touch issues that hit close to home for Virginians: abortion access, national security, and the safety net. They paint a picture of Democratic priorities as the 2026 election cycle heats up.

From reproductive rights to Russia policy, Kaine is staking out ground on the issues Democrats believe will resonate with voters. Whether it's defending abortion access or advancing bipartisan solutions, the message is clear: Democrats are fighting on multiple fronts.
