Who's In the Race
Rep. Dan Meuser (R-PA) faces Democrat Rachel Wallace in the Nov. 3 general election in Pennsylvania's 9th Congressional District. The district's boundaries were redrawn after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court adopted a new congressional map on Feb. 23, 2022.
Dan Meuser has represented the district since January 2019 and previously served as Pennsylvania Secretary of Revenue from 2011 to 2015, according to the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress. He also spent 25 years in business, including seven years as president of Pride USA, according to his official House website.
Wallace was born and raised in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, and her career has included work in the U.S. Senate and State Department, according to her campaign website. Wallace ran unopposed in the May 19 Democratic primary, receiving 100 percent of the vote, according to Ballotpedia.
What They Stand For
Meuser supports securing the border, according to his campaign website. He's also supported:
- Lower taxes and reduced regulation to grow the economy and create jobs,
- Promoting American energy dominance; and
- Protecting national security and restoring peace through strength, according to his official House website.
Wallace has proposed lowering health-care costs and simplifying coverage, according to WGAL. She's also supported:
- Lowering costs and raising wages,
- Congressional term limits of six terms, or 12 years; and
- Overturning Citizens United, according to her campaign website.
The Money Behind the Race
Through June 30, Meuser had raised about $1.9 million and held about $171,000 in cash, while Wallace had raised about $698,000 and held about $387,000, according to allciv.com. Meuser carried $250,000 in debt as of that date, an amount equal to roughly 13 percent of his receipts.
Despite raising nearly three times as much overall, Meuser had less cash available to spend heading into the fall than Wallace, whose $387,000 on hand gave her a roughly two-to-one cash advantage. Outside spending in the race fell below the threshold for reporting.
