In August, Democratic members from Washington state called for a Government Accountability Office (GAO) investigation into warrantless federal surveillance of Americans' bank records.

That same month, Democratic members from Oregon demanded a GAO investigation into federal law enforcement's use of hacking and spyware on Americans.

The bureau has also faced questions about its engagement with protesters during the 2026 Delaney Hall protests, when FBI agents contacted arrested protesters to gather information.

The Hearing

The committee is chaired by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) with Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) as Ranking Member. Senators will return from summer recess on September 14, positioning the hearing for the first full week back.
