Democrat Joaquin Castro won his party's March 3 primary for Texas's 20th U.S. House District, Republican Edgardo Baez won his party's primary, and the general election is set for Nov. 3. Castro is the incumbent representative and advanced from the Democratic primary on March 3, taking 88.2 percent of the vote. Baez ran unopposed in the Republican primary that same day, collecting all 9,240 votes cast.

Race Outlook: Ratings and Betting Markets

Three independent handicappers rate this race solidly in Castro's favor. The Cook Political Report rated the seat "Solid Democratic" as of Sept. 25; Sabato's Crystal Ball assigned the same rating as of Sept. 29; and Inside Elections matched that call as of Oct. 2.

Prediction market Kalshi put the probability of a Democratic win at 97.89 percent and a Republican win at 2.11 percent as of Oct. 5, with a reported volume of 1,105.

Joaquin Castro, a Democrat, won Texas's 20th U.S. House District in 2022 with 68.4 percent of the vote and in 2024 with 100 percent. Republican candidates were the winners in 23 races and Democratic candidates in 13, according to the aggregate winner-party counts. Republican Donald Trump carried Texas in the 2024 presidential election with 56.14 percent of the vote.
