Who's In the Race

Rep. Michael Cloud (R-TX) faces Democrat Tanya Lloyd in the November 3 general election in Texas's 27th District. This is a rematch: Cloud defeated Lloyd in 2024, and voters will cast ballots under a redrawn district map after Texas redrew its congressional boundaries in August 2025.

Cloud has represented the district since 2018 and previously owned a small business in the area. He won the March 3 Republican primary with about 73 percent of the vote over Chris Hatley.

Lloyd is a public-school teacher with nearly two decades in the classroom, including work in Title I schools, who grew up on a family farm outside Lockhart. She won the March 3 Democratic primary with about 63 percent of the vote over Eustaquio Castro-Mendoza.

What They Stand For

Cloud has proposed making federal agencies subject to sunset unless Congress reauthorizes them, according to his official House website. He's also supported:

  • Finishing the border wall and increasing resources for border enforcement,
  • A merit-based immigration system that enforces visa overstays and E-Verify and ends the visa lottery,
  • reducing regulations and taxes on businesses while controlling federal spending and debt; and
  • Protecting the Second Amendment and opposing a federal firearms registry.

Lloyd has proposed a government-funded, single-payer healthcare system and investment in rural hospitals and clinics, according to her campaign website. She's also supported:

  • Codifying Roe v. Wade and protecting access to abortion and reproductive healthcare,
  • Breaking up agribusiness monopolies and redirecting subsidies to small and sustainable farms,
  • Locally owned renewable energy projects and protecting family farmers' water and mineral rights; and
  • Equitable funding for rural schools, higher teacher pay, universal pre-K and daycare, and year-round free school meals.
