Winners & Losers
If you live in Alabama, one of your two U.S. senators is heading for the exit: Tommy Tuberville is retiring his Senate seat to run for governor. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, a Republican, has served in the Senate since 2021 and is now running for governor of Alabama in 2026. His current term runs through Jan. 3, 2027. Tuberville flipped the seat in 2020 from his current Democratic opponent for governor, Doug Jones).
Race Ratings
Tuberville goes into November as the heavy favorite. A Napolitan News Service poll of 800 registered voters, taken Sept. 21–25 for Alabama Policy Action, has him leading Democrat Doug Jones 50% to 37%. Another 8% are undecided. The poll's margin of error is 3.5 percentage points, and a 13-point lead is well outside that. The same poll also tested the U.S. Senate race. Republican Barry Moore leads Democrat Everett Wess 54% to 33%, with 9% undecided.
Betting markets are more confident than the polls. Kalshi's "Alabama Governor winner?" market gave Tuberville about a 93% chance and Jones about 7%. Alabama's presidential voting history points the same way. Republicans carried the state by 30.5 points in 2024 and 25.5 points in 2020.
In Their Corner
Tuberville has drawn the endorsement of President Donald Trump. He chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee Personnel Subcommittee and the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Education and the American Family Subcommittee in the 119th Congress.
