Why It Matters
Rep. Tracey Mann (R-KS) won reelection to Kansas' 1st Congressional District on Nov. 3, defeating Democrat Lauren Reinhold and Libertarian Steven Jacob. The Associated Press called the race for Mann, who will continue representing the predominantly rural district known as the Big First.
Mann's victory preserved a Republican-held seat even as Democrats regained control of the U.S. House of Representatives nationally. The shift will place Mann in the minority when the new Congress convenes in January, giving Democrats control of the chamber's legislative agenda and committee leadership.
The Result
Mann received 149,782 votes, or 59.61%, compared with Reinhold's 94,677 votes, or 37.68%, and Jacob's 6,806 votes, or 2.71%, according to a Decision Desk HQ reporting snapshot updated Nov. 4. Mann led Reinhold by 55,105 votes, approximately 21.9 percentage points. The figures remained unofficial and subject to certification.
The Primary
Reinhold secured the Democratic nomination in the Aug. 4 primary, defeating Colin McRoberts with 25,074 votes, or 64.14%, compared with McRoberts' 14,021 votes, or 35.86%.
Mann defeated Republican primary challenger Craig Musser with 74,523 votes, or 81.01%, compared with Musser's 17,468 votes, or 18.99%, according to Kansas' certified primary results. Mann's approximately 81% share of the vote came in his Republican primary, not his general-election performance.
The Incumbent's Record
Mann has represented Kansas' 1st Congressional District since January 2021. His district includes a substantial portion of the state's agricultural communities, making farming, livestock production and rural economic development central issues in his congressional work.
In a June 4 press release, Mann outlined agricultural priorities that included funding for agricultural research, animal-health programs and rural investment, along with reducing regulations affecting Kansas producers. Mann said he would continue advocating for Kansas agriculture in Washington, emphasizing the importance of federal agricultural programs to producers throughout the district.
Pre-Election Indicators
The Cook Political Report and Inside Elections rated Kansas' 1st Congressional District Solid Republican heading into Election Day, while Sabato's Crystal Ball rated the seat Safe Republican. The ratings reflected the district's longstanding Republican voting history and the electoral environment in which Mann sought another term.
