The Winner
If you live in Louisiana's 2nd U.S. House District, you will continue to be represented in Congress by Troy Carter (D-LA), who has been declared the winner of the 2026 congressional race, according to the Associated Press.
The AP called the race on Nov. 3; Carter ran unopposed in the general election, with only Democratic candidates on the ballot, so no vote shares or margin are available from election results.
The Race
The race drew five candidates in total and Carter was the only one on the general election ballot. Cook Political Report rated the seat Solid D heading into Election Day, and Inside Elections rated it Solid Democrat.
Louisiana's 2nd Congressional District has a total population of about 763,550 residents, a median household income of about $55,400, and a median age of about 38, according to Geographies data for the district.
The share with a bachelor's degree or higher is about 27.6 percent, and the district is about 49.9 percent Black, 34.1 percent white, 10.6 percent Hispanic, and 2.6 percent Asian, with an unemployment rate of about 7.8 percent and about 21.1 percent of residents living below the poverty line.
What's Next
Carter is set to take office on Jan. 3, 2027, as established by the 20th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Carter said he will prioritize defending voting rights and addressing prescription costs, housing affordability, and paychecks in the next Congress, according to a statement on his official House website dated Nov. 4.
