The Winner

If you live in Oregon’s 4th Congressional District, Rep. Val Hoyle (D-OR) will represent you for a third term. The Associated Press called the race for Hoyle, WTOP reported.

In early returns, Hoyle had 54% of the vote to Republican Monique DeSpain’s 43%, with Pacific Green Party candidate Justin Filip at 3%, KLCC reported for OPB. The result keeps the seat in Democratic hands.

The Race

The race was a rematch: Hoyle beat DeSpain, an Air Force veteran and attorney who has never held elected office, by nearly 8 points in 2024. DeSpain easily won this year’s May 19 Republican primary over Stefan Strek, the Oregon Capital Chronicle reported. Cook Political Report rated the race Solid Democratic.

The district spans the southern half of Oregon’s coast and takes in rural, mountainous communities along with the college towns of Eugene and Corvallis, KTVZ has reported. About 710,000 people live there, and the typical household earns about $69,000 a year. About 33% of adults hold at least a bachelor’s degree.

What’s Next

Hoyle’s third term begins Jan. 3, 2027. Oregon is still counting ballots, so the totals will change before the results are certified. Hoyle told KLCC she hopes to “roll back” health care and safety-net cuts in H.R. 1, the spending bill congressional Republicans passed last year.
