The Race

Rep. Tony Wied (R-WI) has raised $1.31 million for his re-election campaign in Wisconsin's 8th Congressional District, compared with $142,000 for Democratic challenger Rick Crosson. That's a roughly 9-to-1 fundraising advantage through Sept. 30 in a race the Cook Political Report rates Solid Republican.

Wied reported $591,000 in cash on hand and $643,000 in campaign debt as of Sept. 30. Crosson reported $46,000 in cash and no debt. Crosson won the Aug. 11 Democratic primary with approximately 35.2% of the vote, narrowly defeating Mark Scheffler, who received 33%, and Katrina deVille, who received 31.6%. Wied ran unopposed in the Republican primary.

Who's Writing the Checks?

The candidates' donor bases differ. CEOs contributed $22,000 to Wied, followed by company presidents ($19,000), business owners ($17,000), and consultants ($15,000). According to the supplied donor breakdown, Crosson received $3,000 from lawyers, $750 from marketing consultants, and $500 each from certified registered nurse anesthetists and doctors.

Retired or unemployed donors accounted for approximately $112,000, or 30%, of Wied's itemized individual contributions and $22,000, or 74%, of Crosson's. These occupation-based figures have not been independently reconciled with itemized FEC transactions. Political committees are a major source of Wied's fundraising. FEC-derived data show approximately $686,000 in PAC contributions to Wied, accounting for more than half his receipts, compared with roughly $9,600 for Crosson in a later reporting snapshot.

What to Watch

Crosson's $46,000 cash balance as of Sept. 30 represented less than 8% of Wied's $591,000. However, a subsequent filing through Oct. 14 showed Crosson raising approximately $168,000 and holding $62,000 in cash, narrowing the comparison slightly.

Wied retains a substantial fundraising and cash advantage, although his $643,000 in outstanding campaign debt complicates his financial position. Independent expenditures by outside groups could also affect the race, but the FEC-derived records reviewed identified no district-specific outside spending.
