The Performance Life Disclosure Act of 2024 requires manufacturers of certain household appliances to attach labels to their products showing how long the appliance is expected to last under normal use conditions, both with and without routine maintenance, plus the estimated annual maintenance cost. The law affects appliance manufacturers and consumers shopping for household products, with enforcement handled by the Federal Trade Commission as a consumer protection matter. The National Institute of Standards and Technology has one year from the bill's enactment to write the detailed regulations and decide which appliances must have these labels, specifying what "normal operating conditions" means for each type. Manufacturers will have five years after an appliance is added to the list before they must start using the new labels on products sold to retail customers. The legislation also requires NIST to create a public system where consumers can report when their appliances reach the end of their performance life, with that data published online by manufacturer and model.
