To direct the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to conduct a pilot program on the provision of naloxone to veterans and their caregivers, and for other purposes.
This bill directs the Department of Veterans Affairs to create a two-year pilot program making naloxone, an opioid overdose reversal medication, available for free at VA pharmacies and medical facilities to veterans and their registered caregivers without requiring a prescription. Anyone who receives naloxone through the program will also get information about VA addiction, suicide prevention, and mental health services, along with instructions on how to use the medication. Within 90 days after the pilot program ends, the VA must report to Congress on how many people received naloxone, whether the program could expand to include family members or non-VA providers, the costs involved, and recommendations for continuing or modifying the initiative. The bill addresses the opioid crisis among veterans by making overdose reversal medication more accessible while connecting veterans to related support services.
