Referred to the Committee on Natural Resources, and in addition to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
The IHS Provider Expansion Act would establish a new Office of Graduate Medical Education Programs within the Indian Health Service to train and recruit doctors, nurses, and other health professionals to work in Indian Health Service facilities. The office would create pathways for medical students and professionals to participate in residency and fellowship programs, oversee existing training programs, and coordinate with academic institutions and other federal agencies including the Veterans Affairs Department and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. An interagency working group would be created to support implementation and long-term planning, with the group required to submit quarterly progress reports to Congress for ten years. The legislation authorizes at least four million dollars annually starting in fiscal year 2026 to establish and operate the office. This bill aims to address healthcare provider shortages in Indian Health Service facilities by building a sustainable pipeline of trained medical professionals.
