This bill would shut down the Office of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, commonly known as SIGAR, by January 31, 2026. SIGAR is a federal watchdog agency that has overseen how the U.S. government spent billions of dollars on reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan. The bill protects employees of SIGAR by making them eligible for the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program, which helps federal workers find new jobs in other government agencies when their positions are eliminated. Any unspent funds remaining in SIGAR's budget after the office closes would be transferred to the State Department and made available for other foreign operations and diplomatic programs, subject to approval by congressional appropriations committees. The legislation was introduced in November 2024 and referred to the House Foreign Affairs and Armed Services committees.
