This bill would allow National Guard and Reserve members who perform duty for more than 30 days to receive credit toward federal student loan forgiveness programs. Currently, these service members can receive credit for active duty lasting 30 days or less, but the bill extends eligibility to include longer periods of duty such as inactive duty training and state-activated duty. Service members would receive credit for each month of covered duty if they made a monthly loan payment during that year, even if they weren't employed full-time in public service jobs at the time. The bill allows borrowers to earn more than the standard 12 monthly credits in a year and removes the requirement to make corresponding payments for qualifying months beyond the twelfth payment annually. The legislation targets Reserve and National Guard members struggling with student debt while serving their country.
