Referred to the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs.
This bill amends the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act to automatically extend residential leases for military members who are deployed. Under the new provision, if a servicemember's lease would normally end while they are deployed, the lease automatically extends month-to-month until 30 days after their deployment ends, giving them time to relocate without losing their housing. A deployment is defined as an assignment lasting between 31 and 540 days where family members cannot accompany the servicemember. Military members can waive this automatic protection in writing before the first extension or choose to end the extended lease at the end of any month during the extended period. The bill does not appear to include new funding or establish a specific implementation timeline, as it relies on existing protections under current law and simply adds new automatic provisions.
