The Expanding the Health Care Workforce Act establishes a federal demonstration project to fund hospitals that partner with high schools to create work-based learning programs in healthcare. Eligible hospitals will receive grants to develop curricula that prepare secondary school students for careers in healthcare or further education in health-related fields, with students gaining hands-on experience through mandatory work hours that increase each year, from at least 20 hours in the first two years to at least 100 hours in the fourth year. The bill requires the Secretary of Health and Human Services to award grants to at least 20 eligible entities spread equally across ten geographic regions, with priority given to hospitals serving medically underserved areas or populations, and at least 25 percent of grants must support expansion of existing programs. Grants will run for four to six years, and the Secretary must report to Congress within five years on program outcomes including student enrollment, graduation rates, and how many participants entered healthcare careers or education. The bill authorizes necessary funding for fiscal years 2025 through 2030, with the grant authority ending six years after the program's establishment.
