The Military Housing Oversight and Service Member Protection Act strengthens oversight of privately-operated military housing that serves active-duty service members, veterans, and their families. The bill requires the Department of Defense to establish formal contract requirements, conduct regular independent inspections of housing units, extend state and local housing protections to military installations, and rescind contracts with landlords who fail to fix serious violations within 90 days. It also mandates increased financial transparency by requiring landlords to publicly disclose financial statements and prohibits senior defense officials and members of Congress on Armed Services committees from owning interests in military housing companies. Additionally, the bill creates a registry of service members and family members who developed health conditions from unsafe housing, establishes presumptions that certain illnesses are service-connected if caused by privatized military housing, and allows eligible family members to access VA health care for housing-related conditions. The bill does not specify new funding amounts but allows spending for these programs through future appropriations acts.
