The Federal Law Enforcement and Public Protection Act requires all federal law enforcement agencies to establish mandatory safety standards for storing and securing service firearms when officers are not actively carrying them. Agencies must require officers to use smart guns, smart locks, trigger locks, safes, or other approved storage methods, and must provide the necessary equipment to comply with these requirements. The bill prohibits storing service firearms in vehicles except in limited circumstances like temporary court storage, and requires agencies to report any lost or stolen firearms to state and local law enforcement as well as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and FBI. Agencies must also train personnel on safe storage practices and provide written materials about firearm safety risks. The legislation authorizes whatever funding is necessary to implement these requirements but does not specify a dollar amount or implementation timeline.
