To amend title 10, United States Code, to permit a retired member of the Armed Forces to serve as a required member of the funeral honors detail for the funeral of a veteran.
The HONORS Act would allow retired members of the Armed Forces to serve on funeral honors details for veterans' funerals, which is currently restricted to active-duty personnel. Under the bill, retired service members could fill these roles if the Secretary of the relevant military branch determines that no active-duty members are available within 50 miles of the funeral location or if using retired members is more cost-effective. The change would apply to the two required military representatives who participate in funeral honors ceremonies for eligible veterans. This legislation affects retired military personnel and veterans' families by potentially expanding who can provide these ceremonial honors. The bill was introduced in December 2024 and referred to the House Committee on Armed Services.
