To promote the provision of exercise machines and equipment, and exercise and fitness classes and instruction, that are accessible to individuals with disabilities.
This bill requires the federal government to establish standards ensuring that fitness facilities provide exercise equipment and classes accessible to people with disabilities. The Access Board must develop accessibility guidelines within 18 months of the bill becoming law, covering what types of accessible equipment gyms and fitness centers must offer and what accessibility features (like closed captioning and audible instructions) machines must include. Within 18 months of those guidelines being issued, the Attorney General must create enforceable regulations requiring fitness facilities to provide accessible equipment and make reasonable accommodations for fitness classes, including having at least one staff member available to assist people with disabilities. The bill applies to all public gyms, fitness centers, and fitness facilities in hotels, schools, and other institutions that serve the general public. The legislation aims to address research showing that people with disabilities face significant barriers to physical activity and exercise, which experts recommend as important for managing chronic health conditions and mental health.
