The Retired Pay Restoration Act would allow military retirees with service-connected disabilities to receive both their military retirement pay and Veterans Affairs disability compensation at the same time, ending the current practice of reducing retirement pay when disability benefits are received. Currently, military retirees must choose between receiving their full retirement pay or receiving disability compensation, creating a financial penalty for those with service-connected injuries or illnesses. This bill eliminates that restriction for any retired service member who qualifies for both types of payments, allowing them to receive the full amount of each benefit simultaneously. The legislation would take effect on January 1, 2024, and would apply to all eligible retirees going forward. The bill has broad bipartisan support in the Senate and is intended to better compensate military veterans for both their years of service and their service-connected disabilities.
