This bill requires the Department of Defense to provide temporary housing for military members and their families who are waiting more than 10 days for permanent on-base housing when they move to a new military base. The temporary accommodations must be appropriate for the family's size and paid for at no cost to the service member beyond their standard housing allowance. The bill affects active-duty military personnel and their dependents who experience delays in accessing permanent military housing during relocations. Within 180 days of the bill becoming law, the Defense Secretary must submit a report to Congress detailing how many military families are on housing waitlists at each installation, how long they are waiting, what factors are causing the waitlists, and why some waits exceed 10 days. The legislation does not specify new funding, but instead directs the Defense Department to use existing resources to cover temporary housing costs within the amount service members would normally receive for housing.
