The Counting Veterans' Cancer Act of 2023 requires the Department of Veterans Affairs to share cancer diagnosis data with state cancer registries across the country. According to the bill, approximately 26,500 cancer cases among veterans were not reported to state registries as of 2017, leaving gaps in the national cancer statistics that public health officials and researchers rely on to track cancer trends and improve treatment. The law directs VA medical facilities to report cancer data in the same manner and timeframe as other healthcare providers without needing separate data-sharing agreements with each state. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will help facilitate the sharing of information between state cancer registries and the VA to ensure veterans' cancer data are included in national tracking systems. This change aims to improve cancer care for veterans by identifying health disparities in the veteran population and increasing their access to clinical trials and cancer research opportunities.
