The Purchased Data Inventory Act would require federal agencies to create and publicly report detailed inventories of personal data they purchase from private vendors. These reports must be submitted to Congress and made publicly available in a searchable, machine-readable format on agency websites, with limited exceptions for classified information. The bill defines covered data purchases as any personal information obtained in exchange for payment that could identify individuals, but excludes data shared between agencies or bulk statistical data. The legislation takes effect 180 days after enactment and aims to increase government transparency and accountability regarding how federal agencies use taxpayer money to purchase information about Americans.
