This bill, known as the SOCIAL MEDIA Act, aims to improve coordination between social media platforms and law enforcement agencies in combating illegal activity online. The legislation requires all social media platforms to establish law enforcement portals within 90 days of enactment, featuring 24/7 staffed contact information, clear policies on user notification during investigations, and details on any outsourced compliance work. Additionally, the bill creates a Federal Trade Commission Platform Safety Advisory Committee composed of representatives from the FTC, DEA, FBI, ICE, local and state law enforcement, victim advocacy groups, social media companies, and transparency advocates to develop uniform reporting standards for how platforms monitor and remove illegal content—particularly related to drug trafficking and fentanyl—and respond to law enforcement inquiries. Within 180 days of the FTC issuing guidance on these metrics, social media platforms must publicly report their compliance, creating a transparent, comparable record of their efforts. The FTC will enforce the requirements as violations of unfair and deceptive practices, with authority over all platforms including those subject to other regulatory frameworks.
