The Kenneth P. Thompson Begin Again Act would allow people convicted of first-time, low-level, nonviolent drug possession offenses to clear their criminal records after successfully completing court-ordered probation. Currently, federal law only permits this record expungement for offenders who were under 21 years old at the time of their offense. This bill removes that age restriction, making record expungement available to adult offenders of any age who meet the other requirements. The change would give people with simple drug possession convictions a fresh start by allowing them to legally clear their records once they have fulfilled their probation requirements. The bill was introduced in July 2023 by Senators Coons and Cornyn and referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
