This bill authorizes Congress to award a posthumous Congressional Gold Medal to Bobby Bowden, the legendary football coach at Florida State University who coached from 1976 to 2009 and won 377 college football games during his 44-year career. The medal recognizes Bowden's achievements both as a coach, including two national championships and 12 Atlantic Coast Conference titles, and as a community leader and family man known for his humanitarian work and Christian values. The Secretary of the Treasury will design and strike the gold medal, which will be given to Bowden's next of kin, and may also produce bronze duplicates for sale to cover production costs. The bill includes no specific funding appropriation, as costs will be charged to the United States Mint Public Enterprise Fund, with revenue from selling duplicate bronze medals returning to that same fund. Two Florida senators introduced the bill in September 2023.
