The Cerro Pelado Fire Assistance Act expands an existing federal assistance program to cover victims of the Cerro Pelado Fire, a wildfire that started on April 22, 2023, in Sandoval County, New Mexico, and was contained on June 15, 2023. The bill amends the Hermit's Peak/Calf Canyon Fire Assistance Act to establish a new Office of Cerro Pelado Fire Claims within the Federal Emergency Management Agency to process and pay claims for fire-related damages. The legislation authorizes whatever funding is necessary for fiscal year 2024 to compensate Cerro Pelado Fire victims while prohibiting funds already allocated for the earlier Hermit's Peak/Calf Canyon Fire from being redirected to the Cerro Pelado claims. The deadline for processing claims is extended to December 31, 2028, and regulations to handle Cerro Pelado Fire claims must be implemented immediately upon the bill's enactment.
