The Ensuring Representation for Survivors Act expands the Legal Assistance for Victims Grant Program to help survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and sexual assault access legal representation. The bill requires the Attorney General to distribute grants to states, with each state receiving 0.5 percent of total appropriated funds to support legal assistance efforts. These grants would fund services including help with protective orders, divorce and custody proceedings, conviction vacatur or expungement, and assistance addressing issues like housing, employment, identity theft, and financial fraud that result from victimization. The legislation increases federal funding for the program from $57 million annually to $80 million per year for fiscal years 2024 through 2028. All states applying for grants must direct funds to eligible public or private organizations that meet existing program requirements.
