The MAUI STRONG Act directs the Small Business Administration to establish an emergency grant program to help businesses and nonprofits on Maui recover from the August 2023 wildfires. Eligible recipients include nonprofits, sole proprietors, independent contractors, small agricultural cooperatives with any number of employees, businesses with no more than 25 employees, and employee-owned corporations with no more than 100 employees that experienced revenue losses after August 8, 2023. Each eligible entity can receive up to $20,000 in grants to cover payroll, rent, mortgage, equipment purchases, materials, or other obligations resulting from revenue losses, with applications processed on a first-come, first-served basis. The program will operate from its establishment through December 31, 2024, and the legislation authorizes $30 million in funding for these grants. The Small Business Administration must submit a report to Congress within two years evaluating how the program performed.
