This bill would increase pay for certain federal correctional officers working in prisons located in rural or remote areas designated as "Rest of U.S." under federal pay classifications. The legislation would allow these Bureau of Prisons employees to receive the pay rate of the nearest higher-paying locality instead of the lower "Rest of U.S." rate, provided that locality is within 200 miles of their worksite. If multiple higher-paying localities exist within that 200-mile radius, officers would receive the pay rate of whichever locality offers the highest compensation. The bill would apply to all Bureau of Prisons employees including both salaried and prevailing wage workers, and the changes would take effect 180 days after the bill becomes law. The legislation aims to address pay disparities for correctional officers in remote locations to help with recruitment and retention in these difficult-to-fill positions.
