The Autonomy for Disabled Veterans Act increases the maximum amount that the Department of Veterans Affairs can spend on home improvements and structural alterations for disabled veterans. The bill raises the benefit cap from current levels to either $6,800 or $9,000 per veteran, depending on when they applied for benefits and whether their disability is service-connected. The annual benefit amounts will automatically adjust for inflation based on construction cost indices, and veterans are limited to receiving no more than three improvements or alterations. This legislation affects disabled veterans who need home modifications to maintain their independence and quality of life, such as wheelchair ramps, bathroom modifications, or other accessibility improvements. Veterans who previously exhausted their benefits under the existing program will not receive additional funds under this new law.
