Read twice and referred to the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.
The REWARD Experience Act of 2023 allows military medical treatment facilities to hire nurses more flexibly by waiving certain work experience requirements for nurses who already work for the Department of Defense. Specifically, hiring managers can bypass standard experience qualifications when considering nurses or practical nurses who either currently work for the military or did so for at least one year, as long as those candidates have earned a bachelor's or graduate degree in nursing from an accredited program. This waiver applies to nursing positions at military hospitals and other Defense Department health care facilities. The bill aims to streamline hiring by recognizing that military nurses with educational credentials and prior military experience may not need to meet all the standard federal work experience rules, though hiring managers must still verify applicants meet all other qualification standards and certify their decisions to the Office of Personnel Management.
