The READINESS Act aims to help federal employees keep their jobs when their spouses in the military or Foreign Service are transferred to new locations. When a covered individual requests help within 30 days of a military or Foreign Service spouse's permanent change of station, their federal agency employer must either allow them to work remotely full-time, transfer them to an equal-level position near the new duty station, transfer them to a remote position with their agency, or place them in unpaid leave status for up to three years. The bill affects all federal employees in this situation across executive, legislative, and judicial branch agencies, including the Postal Service. Agencies must report to the Office of Personnel Management on all such requests and actions taken for the first five fiscal years after the law takes effect, and OPM must then report this information to Congress annually.
