The Mauritania TPS Act of 2024 would designate Mauritania as a country eligible for Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, under U.S. immigration law. This designation would allow Mauritanian nationals currently in the United States to apply for temporary legal protection and work authorization, provided they have been continuously present in the country since the bill's enactment and meet other eligibility requirements. The initial protection period would last 18 months from the date the bill becomes law. Mauritanian nationals applying for TPS would need to register with the Department of Homeland Security and could be charged an application fee of $360, though the department would be required to allow applicants to request fee waivers. The bill also permits the Secretary of Homeland Security to authorize brief trips abroad for TPS holders facing emergency situations, with protections for those who return to the United States.
