The Timber Harvesting Restoration Act of 2024 requires forest supervisors managing underperforming national forests to develop plans for increasing timber sales. Specifically, supervisors of forests selling less than two-thirds of their allowed timber volume must submit improvement reports within 180 days identifying ways to boost harvesting. These reports require consultation with timber industry representatives, state and local governments, tribes, and other stakeholder groups. Forest supervisors must then take concrete steps within one year to increase sales, with the Forest Service providing additional resources like personnel and expedited environmental reviews to assist struggling forests. If a forest fails to reach three-quarters of its allowed timber volume after one year, the supervisor must submit another improvement report, though the Secretary can waive requirements in cases of natural disasters or other valid reasons.
