The RENT Act of 2024 requires rental car companies to obtain customer consent before providing electric vehicles and protects customers who would otherwise be forced to rent EVs against their preference. The bill applies to major rental companies operating across multiple states or near airports with fleets of at least 1,000 vehicles. Under the legislation, rental companies must notify customers at least 12 hours before pickup if only electric vehicles appear available, and customers who did not opt in to renting an EV can terminate their rental agreement without fees or penalties. The Federal Trade Commission has 90 days after enactment to write rules enforcing the law, which treats violations as unfair or deceptive business practices, and customers harmed by violations can sue in federal court for damages and attorney fees.
