The EAT Local Foods Act of 2024 would establish a new federal program to help states and local governments purchase food from nearby farmers, ranchers, and fishers and distribute it to their communities. The program would provide funding through cooperative agreements to eligible units including state agencies, tribal governments, and U.S. territories, with priority given to purchasing from small, beginning, and underserved producers within 400 miles of where the food will be delivered. At least 51 percent of purchases must come from these smaller producers, and at least 51 percent of distributed food must go to underserved communities. The bill would provide $200 million annually through the Commodity Credit Corporation starting in fiscal year 2024, with an additional authorization of $200 million per year for fiscal years 2024 through 2028, and participating entities would have three years to spend their allocated funds.
